Disposable Black Girl Trope⭐️
The debate surrounding the topic of the “Disposable Black Girl Trope” has garnered a lot of attention due to how much it has happened over the years. The “DBGT” has always been a repetitive storyline in TV shows. It usually happens when the male lead in the TV show is trying to disregard his feelings for the female lead and is using the black girl to fill that void that the female lead has left in his heart. Most of the time, the black girl has no knowledge of the male leads prior feelings toward the female lead. They are always left blindsided and omitted when the male lead suddenly breaks up with them. Today, we will be going over an example of the “DBGT”and looking for common stereotypes these girls fit.
Contrary to popular belief, most of the stereotypes of the woman that are used in this trope are not portrayed in a negative light. Many of the girls carry themselves really well and stick out because of their beauty and kindness .They are the type of girls that can easily play the leading role in a show. A great example of this type of character would be “Nicole” from the “Summer I Turned Pretty”.
“Nicole”, “TSITP”
“Nicole” is a very kind, straightforward, and smart character on the show. She started a romantic relationship with the male lead “Conrad” after he helped her with a situation that they had encountered previously . Everything was going well with them, until the female lead shows up for summer vacation. The two have known each other since before he started his relationship with “Nicole”. However as time goes by and his feelings for the main character start to rise to the surface, he then starts to neglect his relationship with “Nicole” . Although “Nicole” started to sense some weird tension between the two she continued to focus on her relationship with “Conrad” trusting that his feelings for her wouldn’t change. However, she was wrong. Once she found out about his feelings toward the female lead she confronted “Conrad” and explained how she wasted her time with him and could’ve been looking for better options. “Nicole” did in fact waste her whole summer thinking that the boy she liked, liked her back. He reassured her numerous times throughout the episodes that he cared for her when in reality he was just keeping her as a back up . This is just one of the many examples of black girls being discarded in television.
In conclusion this trope has gained many viewers attention over the years and black girls are tired of this repetitive trend with black female characters. However all is not lost, there are many shows with unique black female leads that are in admirable relationships. Shows like “Abbot Academy”, “Moesha”, Blackish”,etc. We hope that in the coming years we will be able to see more female black leads have fruitful relationships with their on screen partner.
